Envelo is a cutting-edge technology designed to connect to a variety of IoT devices, aiming to enhance building performance, improve indoor air quality, and generate significant energy savings. Our recent collaboration with the Moberly Sports Centre demonstrates the substantial impact of Envelo’s solutions on building management, indoor health and wellbeing and energy efficiency.
Moberly Sports Centre is a state-of-the-art facility located in London, offering a wide range of amenities to the local community. Opened in June 2018, the Centre features modern and spacious facilities and is designed to accommodate a variety of sports and fitness activities, as well as community events, making it an ideal candidate for Envelo’s energy efficiency and indoor air quality improvement solutions.
Importance of indoor air quality and energy efficiency Indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy efficiency are crucial in gyms and other recreational facilities. Research by Joseph Allen and Harvard University shows that poor indoor air quality can negatively impact health, cognitive function, and productivity. Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that improved ventilation and reduced CO2 levels can boost cognitive function by up to 101% and cut sick building syndrome symptoms by 25-50%. Envelo is unique in that it not only optimises spaces to be the healthiest but also balances for reduced energy costs and consumption, ensuring both environmental and financial benefits.
Moberly Sports Centre continuously seeks to enhance its operations and the environment for its users by focusing on three key areas:
Energy efficiency: Reducing high energy consumption through efficient ventilation management to cut unnecessary costs and decrease the carbon footprint.
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ): Addressing periodic indoor air quality issues during peak times to ensure occupant health and wellbeing, particularly in areas like the Main Gym, Studio 1, and Community Room.
Communication: Enhancing gym usage, membership, and retention by promoting the benefits of a healthier environment.
To fully realise the potential of Envelo’s smart technology, we recommend:
During the initial monitoring phase, Envelo identified
potential energy savings of over £3,500 in January alone
for the spaces covered by Envelo.
By optimising ventilation management, these savings were achieved while maintaining healthy indoor air quality. The collected data supports the scalability of these results across the entire Moberly Sports Centre, suggesting even greater potential savings and environmental benefits.
Significant energy savings: Envelo's technology led to estimated energy savings of £3,500 between 2nd January and 1st February 2024. Annual savings for the monitored areas alone were estimated to exceed £10,000, equivalent to reducing CO2 emissions by over 7 tonnes based on the UK power grid mix. Notably, these monitored areas represent only a small fraction of the entire site.
Improved air quality: Consistently healthy indoor air quality scores were maintained, enhancing occupant comfort and well-being, even during high occupancy.
Operational efficiency: Automation reduced the workload for facility managers, allowing them to concentrate on other critical tasks.
Envelo’s innovative approach to building management not only addresses critical energy efficiency and air quality challenges but also provides measurable benefits that enhance overall building performance.
By leveraging Envelo’s smart technology, Moberly Sports Centre has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient future. We look forward to further implementations across Everyone Active sites and their continued success in transforming building management with Envelo.
